GARDEN CITY, NY – Garden City High School seniors participated in the German American Day Flag Raising Ceremony on Oct. 16.
Students, along with teacher Susanne Basile, attended the annual event at Nassau County Executive Building in Mineola. The event celebrated the contributions of German Americans, along with the German American heritage and the reunification of Germany, a release said.
The event was hosted by Nassau County Supreme Court Justice Ute Wolff Lally and the German American Culture Council.
The U.S. flag and the Federal Republic of Germany flag were both presented at the beginning of the ceremony, followed by the national anthems of those two nations.
Students gave speeches in German, sharing what they like most about studying the language, including the sense of Gemütlichkeit, which means “warmth and good cheer.” They also gave their appreciation to their teacher, and the activities and cultural trips Basile organizes for them to enjoy.
Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman spoke highly of the role German Americans have played in contributing to the nation’s history and development, a release said.
