Soundview tenants met on the 10th floor of the Bronx River Houses NYCHA building on Monday after they claim there are two decomposed dogs in an apartment.
“I can’t even sit in my living room some days because it’s crazy. The smell is coming through the walls,” said tenant Lewis.
Lewis said she and others have been living with a lingering stench throughout the halls for months. A few days ago, they started to see maggots coming out of the apartment door. She said that’s when tenants decided to put plastic and tape over the door.
A tenant across the covered apartment said they believe they know what is behind the apartment doors.
“At first we thought, she’s not cleaning the apartment. I know she had two dogs. After that, we stopped hearing the dogs barking. So, I’m just thinking that maybe she gave the dogs away, but I guess not,” said the tenant.
Other tenants told News 12 they have seen maggots in their homes.
“I found a few in my apartment last night that I had to kill, which is very unhealthy.” said another tenant.
In a statement, NYCHA told News 12, “after NYCHA was made aware of this unfortunate situation, we tried to reach the resident to coordinate access before proceeding with our right to entry. We were unable to make contact and have entered the unit. A vendor will be cleaning the unit thoroughly to minimize any further impacts to neighboring apartments.”
