RIDGEWOOD, Queens (PIX11) — A huge early morning fire destroyed a Queens building and sent nine people, including four firefighters, to the hospital on Saturday.

The fire broke out around 4 a.m. along Flushing Avenue near Woodward and Metropolitan Avenues.

It quickly spread from the tire shop on the bottom to the second and third floors, as well as the building next door.

The flames were so intense that the FDNY says they caused the building to partially collapse inside and forced firefighters to stay out.

“This was a deep-seated and stubborn fire caused by thousands of tires stored in the occupancy. It was a tire repair shop,” fire officials said at the scene.

Red Cross is helping families displaced by the fire, though it’s unclear exactly how many may have been impacted.

Officials say firefighters will be on scene for a while to put out the remaining flames.
