STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Monday is a federal holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the slain civil rights leader known for his tireless efforts to end racial segregation and his promotion of equality without violence.
Though it became a federal holiday in 1986, MLK Day wasn’t adopted by all 50 states until 2000. It always takes place on the third Monday in January.
A recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, King’s contributions to the Civil Rights Movement and to democracy helped bring about the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Staten Island Advance: Advance offices are closed, but the newspaper will publish.
Banks: Most closed
Financial Markets: Closed
Government Offices: Federal, state and city offices are closed
Courts: Closed

Sanitation: No garbage collection, no recycling, no organics collection and no street cleaning.
Residents who normally receive Monday trash, curbside composting, or recycling collection should place their material at the curb Monday evening for collection starting Tuesday, Jan. 20.
Please note that residents may experience collection delays, as there may be a backlog of material.
Schools: Closed
City Parking: Alternate side parking rules are suspended. Parking meter in effect.
