STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Recent repairs on one of Staten Island’s major thoroughfares have left some drivers concerned about the current condition of the road.

Recently, the Staten Island Advance/SILive.com received word from a driver on the North Shore that repairs on Richmond Terrace have left the road in a poor state.

“The roadway must be driven on in both directions and in each respective lane to experience the violent shaking caused by the badly repaired road,” said the tipster, who asked that his name not be published.

According to the North Shore resident, the stretch of Richmond Terrace near Jersey Street and York Avenue in New Brighton was ripped up “months ago” to perform utility work.

The driver commented that after the work was completed and Richmond Terrace was repaved, the road was left uneven, causing vehicles to shake at even low speeds.

In response, the tipster said he filed a 311 request for a failed street repair on Sept. 30, hoping it could get the road repaved.

Within 24 hours, however, the complaint was closed out.

A note on Oct. 1 stated that the city had “inspected the condition … and found that the condition meets its standards and/or there is a valid permit to conduct work,” according to the 311 website.

During a recent visit to the area, a reporter for the Advance/SILive.com also heard from one New Brighton resident who did not want to provide his name but said that the since the road work was finished, the intersection has had an issue with water pooling on the street.

A reporter observed that the asphalt was visibly uneven, and drivers were trying to avoid rough parts of the road.

When asked about the conditions, a spokesperson from the Department of Transportation said that the repaving is temporary and that a contractor has active permits to work on that section of roadway.

According to the spokesperson, the area is being monitored for issues, and the contractor will be notified immediately.

Additionally, the spokesperson said that when a 311 case involving a contractor with an open permit is filed, the cases are closed and sent to the contractor.

The contractor is supposed to make sure that road conditions are up to standard until work is finished, according to the ageny.

According to the DOT’s permit management website, there is a current street opening permit in the area valid from Sept. 28 through Dec. 1.
