In spring 2023, then-U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy called attention to a problem of which Americans had been feeling the crushing weight for years: a nationwide loneliness crisis.
Murthy released a surgeon general’s advisory report on the issue, titled “Our Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation,” writing in an introductory letter that he believed loneliness posed a serious public health hazard.
