Kent & Curwen - Presentation - LFWM January 2019

For months now, it’s been pretty clear that something weird has been going on between Brooklyn Beckham and his family. Since his wedding to Nicola Peltz in April 2022, the tabloids have offered a near-constant stream of intel about the famous family’s interpersonal beef. All the Beckhams have largely stayed silent throughout it all, letting the rumors (and Instagram activity) do the talking. That is, until Monday, when Brooklyn released a lengthy statement about his parents on his Instagram Story. In the statement, Brooklyn accused his family of trying to “ruin” his relationship and hit back against the gossip that Nicola “controls him,” calling it “completely backwards” and claiming he has instead been “controlled by my parents for most of my life.”

“I have been silent for years and made every effort to keep these matters private,” Brooklyn wrote. “Unfortunately, my parents and their team have continued to go to the press, leaving me with no choice but to speak for myself and tell the truth about only some of the lies that have been printed.”

Brooklyn’s post included some wild claims about his and Nicola’s wedding, including that she had to find a new dress “in the eleventh hour” after his mother, Victoria Beckham, apparently backed out of designing the dress at the last minute. “The night before our wedding, members of my family told me that Nicola was ‘not blood’ and ‘not family,’” Brooklyn added.

Brooklyn also claimed Victoria “hijacked” his first dance with Nicola. “In front of our 500 wedding guests, Marc Anthony called me to the stage, where in the schedule was planned to be my romantic dance with my wife but instead my mum was waiting to dance with me instead,” he wrote. “She danced very inappropriately on me in front of everyone. I’ve never felt more uncomfortable or humiliated in my entire life.” He also accused Victoria of inviting “women from my past into our lives in ways that were clearly intended to make us both uncomfortable.” (It’s unclear whether this was a reference to his brother Romeo Beckham’s relationship with Kim Turnbull, who Brooklyn is believed to have previously dated.)

Brooklyn claimed his brothers, Romeo and Cruz Beckham, “were sent to attack me on social media, before they ultimately blocked me out of nowhere this last Summer” — contradicting Cruz’s claim from December that it was Brooklyn who blocked his brothers.

Brooklyn also referenced his father David Beckham’s 50th birthday party in April, where he and Nicola were conspicuously absent. In the statement, Brooklyn said he and Nicola did, in fact, go to London with the intention of seeing David, but claimed he “refused all of our attempts, unless it was at his big birthday party with a hundred guests and cameras at every corner.” “When he finally agreed to see me, it was under the condition that Nicola wasn’t invited. It was a slap in the face,” he added.

Brooklyn said he has no desire “to reconcile with my family,” saying he is “standing up for myself for the first time in my life.” “My family values public promotion and endorsements above all else. Brand Beckham comes first,” he wrote. “Family ‘love’ is decided by how much you post on social media, or how quickly you drop everything to show up and pose for a family photo opp, even if it’s at the expense of our professional obligations.” He said he’s found “peace and relief” since stepping away from them. “My wife and I do not want a life shaped by image, press, or manipulation,” he concluded. “All we want [is] peace, privacy and happiness for us and our future family.”
