It was a busy and successful week across multiple sports for Red Deer Polytechnic, highlighted by dominant volleyball performances, strong outings on the ice and postseason berths secured by both curling teams.

Volleyball

The RDP Kings and Queens volleyball teams swept a weekend doubleheader against the Briercrest College Clippers at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre.

On Friday, the Queens earned a straight-sets win (25-16, 25-17, 25-13), with Nadia McKeage recording seven kills. They followed up Saturday by defeating the Clippers again in three sets (25-17, 25-11, 25-14). First-place RDP improved to 10-2 on the season, with Maddy DeZutter contributing six digs and an assist.

The Kings also delivered back-to-back victories. On Friday, Red Deer swept the Clippers (25-14, 25-19, 25-16), led by Colby Nemeth’s 18 kills on a .727 hitting percentage. Saturday saw another straight-sets win (25-17, 25-19, 25-18) as the first-place Kings moved to 10-2. Setter Evan Mah posted 25 assists, four digs and two kills.

Hockey

The Queens hockey team picked up two wins over the SAIT Trojans. On Friday at home, RDP skated to a 5-1 victory, with Gabriella Meier scoring twice and Rylee Mepham, Kaedence Mollin and Sarah Raymond adding goals. Goaltender Juliette Gagne-Delaunay made 18 saves.

Saturday in Calgary, the second-place Queens (14-4) shut out the Trojans 4-0. Jailyn Bablitz, Camryn Ward, Mia McGregor and Tasha Barsby found the back of the net, while Tora Ward stopped 28 shots to earn the shutout.

The Kings hockey team split its series with the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings. On Friday in Camrose, RDP fell 6-2, with goals from Ryland McNinch and Nathan DeGraves. The Kings rebounded Saturday at home with a 4-1 victory to remain atop the standings at 14-2. DeGraves, Tyson Janzen, Holden Knights and Cade Kennedy scored, while Evan Fradette made 20 saves.

Curling

Both RDP curling teams advanced to the ACAC Curling Championships following Tournament #2, held Jan. 16–18. The Kings finished 3-2 at the event, placing second in the men’s division and securing a combined 7-3 record across both tournaments. The Queens went 2-4, finishing fourth overall with a combined 6-6 record. The ACAC Curling Championships run Jan. 30 to Feb. 1 at the Lac La Biche Curling Club.

Basketball

The RDP basketball teams dropped four road games against the Briercrest College Clippers.

On Friday, the Queens fell 80-50, with Jorgia Hicks and Avery Stypula scoring 14 points each. Saturday saw an improved effort, but the eighth-place Queens (3-11) were edged 83-74 by the top-seed Clippers (9-4), while recording 28 rebounds.

The Kings were defeated 104-79 on Friday, shooting 70.6 per cent from the free-throw line. On Saturday, RDP dropped a 100-76 decision, led by second-year guard Tong Akol, who scored 20 points.
