A campaign of anonymous love letters is sweeping New York City.
If you see one of the red boxes around the city – they’re not just for any mail, they are a place where you can express your feelings for the city and its people through words.
New York is a city with a lot of heart, but penning a passionate love letter is a bit of a lost art. Kelsie Hayes hopes to change that one red mailbox at a time.
It’s part of the Love Letters Campaign, which is now in its second year. The hope is New Yorkers will write a message and drop it off.
“It can be to New York, to a mom, future daughter, to their partner, someone they’ve loved, someone they’d lost,” Hayes said.
Hayes is the founder of Popupflorist and came up with the idea based on notes customers asked her team to include with floral arrangements.
She featured the sweet messages in her book and decided to take the idea on the road.
Now there are 13 mailboxes in place in Brooklyn and Manhattan.
New Yorkers can leave letters through Sunday, but the only request is that it be anonymous.
“I think people can be more vulnerable that way, it’s something for the city, something for everyone,” Hayes said.
Eyewitness News spotted participant Reagan McWhinney deep in thought working on her letter.
“I have so much gratitude for where I am in life right now, I need to put some love out in the universe,” she said.
Last year more than 1,000 letters were collected, some were short and sweet, others poured their hearts out.
Hayes will pick the top 30 and pair them with arrangements that echo the mood of the letter. All will then be showcased in a gallery on Feb. 7.
The red mailboxes can be found at the following locations:
