Sometime it seems that New York State makes laws just to make them. At least that is how a 75-year-old man felt after he was carded and asked for his identification to prove he was old enough to buy a grill lighter. While it might seem like he was being a little too dramatic, there are plenty of people who have also dealt with the same issue.

The grilling season never ends here in Western New York. No matter the weather, we fire up the grill, break out some steaks and get ready to eat, even in a blizzard! From the tailgate, to the backyard and hunting camp, you can smell that delicious barbecue all year round! There are some who are concerned that new laws might threaten grilling outdoors in New York State as the state aims to become more “green” with environmentally friendly laws.

But before the grill even gets lighted, there is one small hurdle that you might face in New York State.

According to a man from Elma, New York, he was asked for his ID when he tried to purchase a grill lighter. “I just went to buy a grill lighter (at a local store) and I had to show ID, honestly the guy asked for my ID”. He goes on to share that, “it is insane to ID to buy grill lighters. I’m 75 years old and I have to show ID to buy a lighter-I almost fainted”.

What is the New York State law?

While it seems we are being carded for everything these days, what does New York State officially say? The truth is, there are some stores that have their own policies pertaining to asking for ID for certain things. When you look at the law in New York State, it mentions novelty lighters. Grill lighters might fall under that law. But it likely comes down to products related to smoking or vaping that causes stores to card you.

True, the store staff is merely doing their jobs when they ask for ID. However, it does not make things more frustrating.
