Authorities are investigating a police shooting that left a man dead in Jersey City.
The city’s mayor said Tuesday the shooting happened the previous evening near Bergen and Ege avenues.
According to Mayor Steven Fulop, officers with the city’s Street Crimes Unit noticed an individual acting “suspiciously” and saw a “bulge” in his clothing consistent with a possible weapon.
When an officer approached him, Fulop says the suspect opened fire. The officer returned fire, hitting the suspect. The cop wasn’t injured.
The suspect later died at a hospital. A firearm was recovered at the scene.
The Attorney General’s office has taken over the investigation, as is protocol in the case of fatal police shootings.
