Synopsis of Idomeneo

The opera is set on the island of Crete shortly after the Trojan War.

The Vow: King Idomeneo, returning from the war, is caught in a violent storm. He makes a desperate vow to the sea god Neptune: to sacrifice the first living person he sees on shore if his life and fleet are spared.

The Dilemma: Neptune saves him, but the first person Idomeneo encounters upon landing is his own son, Idamante.

Conflict and Jealousy: Idomeneo is tormented by his vow. Meanwhile, Idamante is in love with Ilia, a captive Trojan princess. Another Greek princess, Elettra, is also in love with Idamante and grows jealous of Ilia.

Divine Wrath: Idomeneo attempts to send his son away to Argos with Elettra to protect him from the vow, but Neptune, angered by the delay, sends a monster to terrorize Crete. The people demand to know who has offended the gods.

Resolution: The opera culminates in a resolution that involves themes of duty, sacrifice, hope, and regeneration, with a powerful role for the chorus, leading to a happy ending as required by traditional opera seria.
