The all-Democratic Troy City Council said it reached an agreement with Mayor Carmella Mantello’s administration to use only half of a $6 million of a bond originally passed by the Republican-controlled council last year to make improvements to Frear Park.

The council will formalize this move at its next meeting, scheduled for Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. at City Hall.

Council leaders also say they’ve secured more time for public input on future park improvements.

Mantello, a Republican, responded Wednesday, saying council President Sue Steele’s claim that the new council saved taxpayers $3 million of the bond was false. She said while the previous council authorized a bond of up to $6 million, the city only went to the bond market for $3 million.

“What a municipality is authorized to borrow and what it actually borrows are two entirely different things,” Mantello said.
