Amazon has begun building a huge new warehouse in Upstate New York, according to a new report.
The retail giant started construction on what will be a 3.2 million square-foot distribution center in the Capital Region, according to the Albany Business Review. The $621 million facility will be located near Exit 27 off the New York State Thruway in the Montgomery County town of Florida.
According to the Business Review, the online retailer paid $13.5 million for 143 acres of land. Amazon will receive tax exemptions worth $30 million and an estimated $44.9 million in real property tax exemptions over 15 years, the Montgomery County Industrial Development Agency told the publication.
Construction began in late December and will be completed in late 2027 or early 2028, the IDA said. Nearly 400 construction workers will be employed during the project.
According to previous reports, the warehouse is expected to be 4.5 stories tall and employ at least 750 people over three shifts a day. Amazon would also hire hundreds more part-time and seasonal workers, according to the Business Review.
The facility is expected to use robotic storage systems instead of traditional warehouse racking. Orders would be picked, packed and shipped 24 hours, seven days a week to local delivery centers.
Amazon operates a similar facility in the town of Clay that totals five stories and 3.8 million square feet. The Syracuse-area warehouse opened in 2022 and also uses robotics in combination with human workers.
The new Amazon warehouse will be just outside of Amsterdam, about 35 miles from Albany. It will be on Route 5S, near a 1.9 million-square-foot Target distribution center, less than 2 miles from the NYS Thruway’s Amsterdam exit.
Available jobs will be posted on Amazon.com closer to the opening date.
