Snow prep, but make it mobile.
Meteorologists and journalists alike are throwing around words like “catastrophic” and “historic” about the winter storm forecast from Texas to the Carolinas and up to the Northeast. Naturally, like with any NYC snow forecast, New Yorkers are reacting with our distinctive blend of stoic indifference or frantic panic shopping.
Forecasters are warning of a massive system that’s about to wallop the country. In fact, the National Weather Service said on Thursday that 132 million people are under a winter storm watch or extreme cold warning on the storm map ahead of the weekend.
Love this timing for me.
I’m currently scheduled to fly from the Midwest back to NYC right as the worst of the storm is supposed to hit. I found an entirely new learning curve on the American Airlines app I never wanted to know about. But while Winter Storm Fern and I have words so I can get back to the office on Monday, you have the luxury of time to prepare.
The days of bodega brawls over bread and toilet paper are over. Today, you just need to click “Add to Cart” before the delivery window runs out. That’s where my team and I come in.
We combed through the junk to find the actual essentials, from heaters that work to the hand cream that will save your cracked knuckles, so you can know how to actually prep for a winter storm with warm toes and a fully charged phone, even if the power goes out.
Heat, Light and Power
Jackery Explorer 1000 v2 Portable Power Station + Carry Bag
If the power goes out, you will, in fact, become the most popular person in your building (if you so choose). Not too long ago, having an apartment-friendly power generator wasn’t an option. Not anymore.
Anker Surge Protector Power Strip
Because every power outage turns that generator into a charging hub for phones, earbuds, laptops and your coffee maker. Here’s a well-reviewed, less expensive option, too.
Lasko 751320 Ceramic Heater with Remote
The remote control may feel a bit unnecessary until you’re buried in a blanket and refuse to get up from the couch on principle. There’s a smaller, more portable option from the brand as well.
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, right? Fire always works, so keep it simple. Buy a big pack, and suddenly you’re prepared and oddly sophisticated.
Prepared Hero Emergency Fire Blanket
The obvious follow-up to the above. Not fun, just smart. This is a quick way to smother small fires without turning your night into a Post-worthy headline.
Keep It Cozy
UGG Euphoria Faux Fur Throw Blanket
Ridiculously plush. It’s giving “ski lodge,” even if you’re just dirty sidewalk snow. This is a New York Post reader favorite, but Bedsure has a sherpa fleece microfiber blanket popular among Amazon shoppers for a little less.
OCOOPA Rechargeable Hand Warmers
Rechargeable handwarmers are a saving grace when temperatures dip, so having a set that you can keep charged is a no-brainer. If these aren’t in your budget, HotHands has a 10-pack of pairs for under $10.
WEERTI Thermal Underwear for Men and Women
Your base layer for dog walks, snowball fights and pretending you’re “fine” in the wind tunnel from the train to the office.
AIvada Merino Wool Hiking Socks
Merino helps with warmth and sweat, so you don’t feel gross five minutes into your day, be it stuck at home or stuck at the office.
These windproof and waterproof gloves are great for when it’s not just cold, it’s “shut down the city” cold.
Keep your ears from going numb on those quick walks that turn into an event.
If there’s one category not to cheap out on, it’s whatever keeps you upright on black ice. There are still plenty in your size that will make it in time to pick a fight with Fern.
Car and Commute Insurance
Great for stoops, steps and sidewalks since this is safe for concrete. Bonus points if you have dogs in the building — this is safe for puppy paws too.
There are those who pop up their windshield wipers, and there are those who laugh at those people. Be the latter with a windshield cover. (It’s cheap!)
Extendable Ice Scraper + Brush
If you keep a car in the city, you already know: this is not optional.
For your car, apartment, hallway, anywhere everywhere. These are one of the most underrated storm staples.
WOLFBOX Jump Starter + Air Compressor (4-in-1)
Dead battery, low tire, phone needs juice. This is the “I can handle it” box for your trunk.
TERUNSOUl 4K Front + Rear Dash Cam
If you must drive over the weekend, think about it this way: snow + fender benders + insurance = a camera suddenly feels very reasonable. (Just ask Ashpia Natasha.)
Bathroom and Household Sanity
You know why this is here. Personally, if you’re stuck in 500 square feet with someone all weekend, I also suggest this.
Hefty Strong Kitchen Trash Bags
Trash pickup delays happen. Don’t let your apartment become a landfill.
If I’m stuck inside with flu cases on the rise, I’m making sure I’m keeping things clean. You do you, but these are already on the truck, making their way to me.
