ALBANY, New York (WWNY) – The state says a North Country school district has one of the highest rates of fiscal stress in New York.
The state Comptroller’s Office on Thursday released a list of 31 districts under fiscal stress.
The Harrisville Central School District was one of two districts in the state classified as being in “significant fiscal stress,” the highest category on the list.
The only other district in New York with the same level of stress is in Westchester County.
What does that mean? The stress score is based on several factors: year-end fund balance, operating deficits, cash position, and reliance on short-term debt for cash flow. The higher the score, the more severe the level of stress.
Two other school districts in the North County made the list, Ogdensburg and Salmon River. They’re both considered to be “susceptible to fiscal stress.”
The information is based on the districts’ fiscal year that ended last June.
