Americans are set to spend a record $13.1 billion on Halloween this year, with candy prices spiking for reasons you might not expect.

Trick-or-Treat safety tips

Be alert

It is important to pick a trick-or-treat route that you are familiar with — preferably a neighborhood you feel comfortable in. Be sure to stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

Visit neighbors

Want a pal to go trick-or-treating with? There’s no better tag-along than a neighbor or someone you know. It is not advised to spend the holiday with strangers.

Follow the light

It may be Halloween, but darkness is not your friend. It is advised to only visit homes that have the light on and to certainly carry a flashlight to light your path.

Be careful with children

In the midst of Halloween excitement and chaos, it’s essential to keep your children close and hold their hand to ensure their safety. Remind them not to run toward vehicles or hazardous areas like canals, lakes, or pools.

Look out for pets

While many of our furry friends are friendly, some pets and animals can be unpredictable and may pose a danger to you and your family — especially if they bite. Be sure to only approach pets you are familiar with.

Have your phone ready

Always keep your phone handy in case of an emergency and dial 911 if you need help.

Avoid allergies

It is important to read labels before consuming any candy and check for ingredients to avoid any unexpected allergic reactions.
