BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Forward Leo Velkin and defenseman Dylan Kehley scored goals with less than two minutes remaining in the second period to rally St. Joseph by-the-Sea past St. Mary’s/St. John the Baptist, 2-1, in a CHSHL A encounter Friday night at Abe Stark Arena.
The Vikings improved to 11-0-1, while the Gaels fell to 5-4-1.
The Gaels struck first late in the opening period to take a 1-0 lead into the first intermission, despite five power-play opportunities for the Vikings.
The score remained that way through most of the second period until Velkin and Kehley found the net.
In the waning seconds of the period, however, Sea was called for two penalties, setting up a two-man advantage for their opponent to start the third.
A stingy penalty kill (7 for 7) and strong goaltending by Justin Marzullo (28 saves) kept the Vikings in front.
One last opportunity for the Gaels’ power play with 1:34 remaining fell short, and the Vikings held on for the victory.
