MARLBOROUGH, N.Y. — A man died and a woman was seriously injured Friday afternoon in a two-car crash in the vicinity of U.S. Route 9W and Mahoney Road in the town, state police said Saturday.

In a press release, state police said at about 12:56 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, a 2010 Honda was traveling northbound on Route 9W when it attempted to “pass an uninvolved vehicle by utilizing the eastern shoulder of the northbound lane.”

Police said while traveling on the shoulder, the Honda struck a small snowbank and continued partially off the roadway. After attempting to re-enter the northbound lane, the Honda “overcorrected and crossed into the southbound lane,” colliding head-on with a 2023 Kia, the release said.

The driver of the Honda, identified as Isaiah D. Towne, 25, of Montgomery, was extricated from the vehicle but pronounced dead at the scene due to his injuries, according to authorities.

The driver of the Kia, identified as Angela A. Freeborn, 74, of Marlboro, was sent to MidHudson Regional Hospital in Poughkeepsie with serious injuries. The release said Freeborn was “listed in stable condition.”
