STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Point guard Chris Albano scored 21 points and Susan Wagner broke open a close game with a big second quarter as it cruised to a 78-53 PSAL 4A division victory over visiting Brooklyn Collegiate Saturday in Sea View.
The Falcons, who played for the first time in a week, also received double-digit scoring from Clevi Hoxha (18 points, four treys) and Charles Gambino (13 points). Darin Humes-James and Adem Djonbalic teamed for another 13 markers for Wagner, which improved to 15-6 overall, including 8-4 in league play.
Shane Seymour and Bamba Diouf finished with 20 and 12 points, respectively, for Brooklyn Collegiate.
“It was a very good performance overall,’’ said SW head coach Danny Lanigan, who received strong rebounding games from Gambino (nine) and Humes-James (eight). ”We are sharing the ball as best as we have all season and it’s been putting our shooters in great position to make shots.
“We shoot it at a much higher level when the ball is moving and that showed today,’’ added the coach. ”We received another solid game from our leading scorers.’’
Wagner trailed 18-16 after one period, but it turned the tables after limiting the Lions to just seven points in the second quarter. Albano scored nine points and Gambino added six as the Falcons took a 35-25 advantage into halftime.
Lanigan’s troops never took the foot off the pedal in the second half. Humes-James and Hoxha tallied five points apiece — including one trey each — as SW took a commanding 51-34 lead into the final quarter.
MSIT 74, Norman Thomas 60
MANHATTAN — Senior Ray Guerriero finished with a career-high 27 points and the Seagulls built a double-digit halftime lead en route to a PSAL 3A division win over the host Tigers on Saturday.
Guerriero finished with 11 field goals, including a pair of treys, as the Gulls snapped a two-game losing streak to improve to 13-8 overall (8-4 PSAL). Dalton Cherubin (17 points) and Terrence Legrand (nine points) also contributed offensively for MSIT.
Micah Burgos scored a team-high 19 points and Mason Rosen added 15 for the Tigers (1-9 PSAL).
Cherubin scored all of his points in the first half and Guerriero added 16 markers as head coach Charlie Donohue’s troops took a 49-37 lead into the lockers.
Although Thomas stormed back to cut its deficit to just six (59-53) after three quarters, Guerriero helped restore order during the final eight minutes. The senior scored six and Jayden Lin added a trey to help the winners pull away.
Eagle SI 78, Washington Irving 41
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Armani Perez finished with a game-high 25 points and Juneek Daniels posted a double-double as Eagle cruised to the PSAL 3A victory over visiting Bulldogs on Saturday in Stapleton.
Perez added six rebounds and four steals while Daniels scored a career-high 22 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. EASI improved to 7-13 overall (4-8 PSAL).
Justin Webley added 16 points (two treys) while point guard Anthony Riley turned in a strong floor game (six points, nine rebounds, five assists).
Perez’s 15 first-half points helped give EASI a 30-23 advantage at halftime. But head coach Justin Spisto’s team got some separation in the third quarter after it exploded for 25 points.
Daniels led the way with 12 points, including a pair of conventional three-point plays, as Eagle built a 55-36 lead through three and cruised the rest of the way.
Mount St. Michael 63, St. Peter’s 51
THE BRONX — Senior Nico Parlanti led a balanced attack with 12 points, but the Eagles fell behind early and never fully recovered as they dropped the CHSAA AA decision to the host Mountaineers on Saturday.
In addition to Parlanti, Victor Baez (10 points), Aaron Vazquez (10 points) and Tyler Schoenberg (eight points) contributed offensively for St. Peter’s. The Eagles, who defeated Bishop Loughlin in Brooklyn, 52-51, on Friday night, dropped to 8-9 overall (2-6 league).
Derek Lugo led the way for Mount with 15 points, including four shots from behind the arc. Drew Diaz added 14 markers while Shane Lopez and Supreme Hinton chipped in with 10 apiece for the Bronx school, which improved to 9-9 overall (3-7 CHSAA).
Parlanti scored eight first-quarter points and the Eagles only trailed, 17-15, at quarter’s end.
But after Mount built a halftime lead of 34-27, Hinton led a balanced attack with four points as the hosts carried a 47-35 advantage into the final stanza.
Mount was able to hold the Eagles at bay as it drained 8 of 10 freebies in the final eight minutes (Diaz 5 for 6).
Percy Sutton 58, New Dorp 55
MANHATTAN — Sergio Batista finished with a team-high 18 points, but the Centrals had their seven-game winning streak snapped after suffering the PSAL 3A loss to the host Senators.
In addition to Batista, Omari Onwe (11 points), Vincenzo Fiorenza (nine points) and Josh Carter (nine points) also contributed offensively for 13-5 New Dorp (9-2 PSAL).
Steven Tenorio and Omari Reede (three treys, 4 of 5 FTs) scored 21 and 13 points, respectively, for the Senators.
New Dorp trailed 34-26 at halftime, but it tightened the screws defensively in the third to limit the Manhattan squad to just nine points. In the meantime, Fiorenza hit the first of his three three-pointers the Centrals had six different players find the scoring column to help cut their deficit to four (43-39) entering the final eight minutes.
But although Carter and Fiorenza tallied six points apiece in the final period, the Senators put on a free-throw clinic to clinch the win. Zahir Thacker (4 for 4), Tenorio (3 for 4) and Reede (2 for 2) led the way as Sutton canned 9 of 11 freebies with the game on the line.
Murry Bergtraum 50, Petrides 49
MANHATTAN — Junior Kareem Nesbitt poured in 22 points, but the Panthers suffered the one-point PSAL 3A division defeat at the hands of the host Blazers on Saturday.
Jaiden Brown and Daynell Rowland added 13 and 12 points, respectively, for Petrides, which dropped to 5-13 overall (2-9 PSAL).
Eddie Perez scored a team-high 14 points and Demarjay Smith added 12 for Bergtraum.
Nesbitt and Rowland teamed for nine first-quarter markers to give the Sunnyside school an 11-10 advantage at quarter’s end.
However, Smith (four points) helped the Blazers outscore Petrides 14-10 in the second period and it ultimately was the difference as the teams played evenly after halftime.
Nesbitt finished 5 of 6 from the line with a trey for the Panthers.
St. John’s Prep 77, Sea 45
QUEENS, N.Y. — Junior Nick Rebracca scored a team-high 24 points, but the Vikings found themselves behind the eight-ball early and never recovered as they dropped the CHSAA A decision to the host Red Storm on Saturday.
The Vikings, who played for the first time in nine days, dropped their second straight to fall to 10-7 overall. The Vikings and Monsignor Farrell are now tied for second place with 8-5 records in the CHSAA A division. Both teams have three games to go in division play, including a crucial battle against each other in Huguenot on Friday (7 p.m.).
The Red Storm, meanwhile, received a game-high 31 points from junior Richard Fernandez. The 6-foot-1 guard buried a whopping eight three-pointers, including one that went for a four-point play.
SJP improved its first-place record to 11-1 in league play (16-2 overall).
Fernandez hit three three-pointers, Duquan Bryant scored five and Nifonos Tryfonos added a three-point play as the Red Storm raced to a 25-9 advantage after one period and cruised the rest of the way.
WHEELS 85, Port Richmond 52
MANHATTAN — Senior Andrew Lawrence finished with a career-high 14 points, but the visiting Raiders fell into a double-digit hole early and never recovered as they dropped the PSAL 3A decision to the Wolves on Saturday.
Mehki Hines added 11 points while Aaron Bramble and Dyshawn Cartagena combined for another 13 markers as the Raiders dropped to 1-10 in league play (2-14 overall).
Miguel Martinez Garcia finished with a game-high 30 points, including seven three-pointers and a 5-for-6 performance from the charity stripe as WHEELS improved to 11-1 in the PSAL 3A Manhattan II division. Jordan Castillo (14 points) and Daniel Reyes (12 points) also contributed offensively for the winners.
The Wolves exploded for seven three-pointers in the first quarter, including three by Reyes as they jumped to a 26-15 lead after one quarter and never looked back.
Graphics 85, CSIM 29
MANHATTAN — The 49ers opened the contest with a 15-0 run and cruised to the PSAL 3A victory over the visiting Dragons on Saturday.
CSIM, which played without big man Xavier Farley (calf injury), was led offensively by Stanley Kushnir (seven points), Danny O’Connor (six points) and Danny Zajonc (five points).
Graphics, which improved to 16-3 overall (9-2 PSAL), had four players finish in double digits: Donnell Capers with 17 points, Deneil Johnson with 16 points, Juan Tinch with 11 points and Alan Alsaint with 10 points.
Tinch and Jaiden Pagan scored six points apiece as the 49ers raced to a 23-6 advantage after one period and never looked back.
