NEW YORK (PIX11) — A dangerous winter storm brought snow, sleet, and gusty winds to New York on Sunday.

A winter storm warning is in effect until Monday afternoon. State and city officials urged residents to stay indoors and off the roads.

The storm swept into the region earlier than anticipated on Sunday morning. Heavy snow fell for hours before switching to sleet and freezing rain in some areas in the afternoon.

Meteorologists warned that the storm would switch back to snow Sunday night before tapering off on Monday.

How to check if your street has been plowed

New York City, southern Long Island, and coastal New Jersey are expected to get between 8 and 12 inches of snow. As of 2 p.m., New York City area airports were reporting preliminary snow totals between 6 and 8 inches.

Laguardia Airport was closed at 1 p.m. due to the snowstorm. The storm is also impacting Metro-North and Long Island Rail Road service.
