STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — As night falls, New York City’s Sanitation Department is working hard to make sure the streets are clean for stragglers battling the snowstorm.

As of 5:30 p.m., the PlowNYC website shows the following major roadways being cleared within the last hour:

Richmond Avenue Hylan Boulevard (A stretch in near Fingerboard Road was last plowed one to three hours ago)Arthur Kill RoadTodt Hill RoadSlosson AvenueMost of Manor Road (Some unplowed portions were plowed in the last one to three hours)Most of Clove Road (Some unplowed portions were plowed in the last one to three hours)Richmond TerraceBay Street (Some unplowed portions were plowed in the last one to three hours)New Dorp LaneMost of Amboy Road (A stretch in Bay Terrace was last plowed one to three hours ago)Korean War Veterans Parkway West Shore ExpresswayStaten Island Expressway Victory BoulevardSouth Avenue

“Plows operate when the streets have at least 2 inches of snow on them. The plow is raised a bit off the ground to avoid ‘tripping’ on things like manhole covers,” A Sanitation spokesperson explained.

The plows can be monitored on the department’s PlowNYC map, which can be found at plownyc.cityofnewyork.us/plownyc/.

Without meeting the 2-inch minimum, the plows — and PlowNYC, the city’s plow map — do not deploy. This standard has been held for roughly a decade, the spokesperson said.

More than 700 salt spreaders are moving through New York City streets to combat the slippery, snowy conditions.

PlowNYC does not show salt spreaders on its map.
