The New York Giants are hiring Chris Horton as their new special teams coordinator, bringing in one of the NFL’s most respected assistants from the Baltimore Ravens.
Over 12 seasons in Baltimore, Horton built consistently elite units under John Harbaugh, regularly ranking in the top tier of DVOA metrics while developing multiple Pro Bowlers, including Justin Tucker and Devin Duvernay.
Known for disciplined coverage, explosive returns, and schematic creativity, Horton now takes over a Giants phase in need of stability.
Here are five things to know about Big Blue’s new special teams coordinator.
Previous ties to Giants organization
Horton has prior experience with the Giants, having signed with the team in March 2012 as a veteran safety. He was part of the 90-man offseason roster before being released in August of that year, giving him a brief but direct connection to the franchise as a player.

Chris Horton is joining John Harbaugh’s staff in New York after spending over a decade working under him with the Ravens. The two have a long-standing professional relationship built on shared philosophy and success, making Horton a trusted choice for Harbaugh’s rebuilding project with the Giants.
Transitioned quickly to coaching
After his playing career ended, Horton returned to UCLA as a quality control coach from 2012 to 2013. Working under head coach Jim Mora Jr., he assisted with defense and special teams, beginning his coaching journey at his alma mater.
Joined Ravens staff in 2014
Horton entered the NFL coaching ranks through Baltimore’s internship program in 2014. He initially worked with outside linebackers before shifting to special teams, serving as assistant special teams coach from 2015 to 2018 under coordinator Jerry Rosburg.
Led consistently top-ranked special teams
Baltimore’s special teams frequently ranked in the top 10 (often top 3) in Football Outsiders’ DVOA metrics during Horton’s time as coordinator. The unit excelled in punt returns, kick coverage, and net punting, with multiple No. 1 overall finishes in recent years.
