LONG ISLAND CITY, Queens (PIX11) — With temperatures expected to stay cold, snow and ice aren’t going anywhere anytime soon, becoming part of the daily routine for New Yorkers across the city.

In Queens, commuters say the lingering buildup is making an already challenging commute even harder.

“When it’s piled up like this, it really makes our lives difficult,” said Marcia Evangelista, a commuter navigating snow-covered sidewalks and bus stops.

Evangelista says staying home isn’t an option. “I’m a nurse, it’s our calling and our work, we cannot really escape,” she said. “So, we need to go to work, whatever it takes. I’m just taking the buses and trains, and it’s really difficult to walk.”

Across the borough, neighbors were also working overtime to dig out from the storm. In Astoria, piles of snow and ice covered streets, some nearly unrecognizable after the neighborhood saw as much as 10 inches of snow on Sunday.

“I’ve been here since one o’clock this afternoon,” said Queens resident David Sheppard, as he shoveled out two cars. “After this turns into ice, you’re not gonna be able to do anything.”

Bus stops remain another major concern, with snowbanks forcing riders to wait in the street or navigate icy sidewalks. “It’s the projects, it’s Long Island City, there’s a lot of commuting going from here, trying to get up to the Bronx, to Manhattan,” said Frankie, a Queens resident.

Despite the frustration, some residents say they’re trying to keep a positive outlook. “[I’m] dealing with it as best as we could,” said Joe Nobile, who missed his bus but stayed to help neighbors push out stuck cars. “Watching everyone get stuck and helping them push it out.”

The New York City Department of Sanitation says about 2,500 workers are currently on 12-hour shifts working to clear snow across the city. In Queens, plow trucks are passing through neighborhoods at least three times a day.
