Around NYC
1. NYPD: 8 people found dead outdoors as frigid temperatures grip city
Eight people were found dead outdoors across New York City during a roughly 48-hour stretch of extreme cold, as temperatures plunged into the teens and single digits.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani said shelters have relaxed intake rules under Code Blue conditions and urged residents to call 311 if they see someone in distress. The deaths come as volunteers prepare for the annual Hope Count of the city’s unsheltered population.
2. Mayor declares remote learning day a success
With schools closed after a major winter storm, roughly 375,000 New York City students logged in for the first remote learning day in two years, about 80% of expected attendance.
City officials said the rollout was smooth despite minor Google Classroom issues. Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Schools Chancellor Kamar Samuels joined virtual classrooms, while the city deployed 8,000 workers to prepare buildings to reopen on Tuesday.
3. Republicans appeal decision that threw out NYC’s only GOP-controlled House district
Republicans appealed a judge’s ruling that ordered New York to redraw the state’s only GOP-held congressional district in the city, represented by Rep. Nicole Malliotakis.
The judge found the Staten Island and Brooklyn district diluted Black and Hispanic voting power and set a Feb. 6 deadline for new lines. The case adds to a broader national battle over redistricting and control of the U.S. House.
