New Yorkers should be cautious during dangerous conditions developing tonight into early Wednesday, the New York City Office of Emergency Management (OEM) warns.
A “prolonged and severe” cold event is underway as another Arctic air surge arrives.
“Being outside will feel painful. Exposed skin can freeze in minutes. Waiting for transit, walking, or working outdoors will be dangerous without full winter protection,” OEM said. “After midnight, wind chills will fall below zero, reaching about 5 to 9 degrees below zero by early Wednesday morning. These are life threatening conditions for anyone exposed for more than a short time.”
OEM added that homes will lose heat faster, pipes are at higher risk of freezing, cars may have trouble starting, and roads may become icy overnight — especially on bridges.
Nina Pineda has 7 things to do protect your home during the winter.
“Limit time outdoors. Cover all exposed skin. Check on neighbors. Bring pets inside. If you lack heat, call 311… Call 311 if you see someone at risk outdoors,” OEM urged. “People without reliable heat, older adults, people experiencing homelessness, and those with medical conditions face the highest risk.”
