NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) — As arctic temperatures continue to grip New York City, causing icy conditions even on the Hudson River, hypothermia calls are on the rise across the five boroughs, according to an internal memo to EMS members.

The memo reminding EMS members to do extra canvassing for potential hypothermia patients comes after at least 10 New Yorkers have died since subzero wind chills have hit the city over the weekend.

“We don’t yet know whether every case will be ruled hypothermia, but we need every New Yorker to be on alert, looking out for their neighbors,” said New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani during a briefing on Tuesday.

New York City has been under a Code Blue since Jan. 22 ahead of Sunday’s winter storm. The declaration mandates that warming centers must remain open and that anyone in need of shelter cannot be turned away. Additionally, more homeless outreach teams are assigned to help those in need.
