STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – For at least one morning in Oakwood, the usual sight of “iPad kids” disappeared.

On Wednesday, St. Charles School welcomed students from St. Teresa–St. Rita STREAM Academy as both schools celebrated “Literacy Day,” a highlight of Catholic Schools Week.

More than 70 first- and second-grade pupils gathered in the St. Charles gym, dressed as their favorite book characters, to share stories, create crafts, and celebrate their love of reading.

Staten Island Borough President Vito Fossella and Regional Superintendent Jann Amato joined the festivities by reading aloud the beloved children’s book “The Rainbow Fish,” a fitting choice, as its message of kindness and collaboration reflected the spirit of the day.

“STREAM Academy and St. Charles School partner each Catholic Schools Week to celebrate the amazing work of the students and the faculties of two faith-based, academically strong institutions,” said St. Charles Principal J.C. Kiernan. “Having Mr. Fossella and Ms. Amato join us on this special day exemplifies their dedication to Catholic education on Staten Island.”
