On October 20, 2025, at approximately 1:50 a.m., members of the New York State Police responded to State Route 30 in the town of Malone for a report of a one-car rollover accident. Upon arrival, Troopers located a silver 2012 Kia in the west ditch.

An investigation determined that the vehicle was being operated by Trent A. Thomas, age 35, of Cornwall, Ontario. Thomas was traveling south on State Route 30 when he failed to maintain his lane, struck a mailbox, and came to rest in the ditch on the west shoulder.

Thomas was being evaluated by Malone EMS when Troopers arrived and was subsequently transported to Alice Hyde Medical Center for further evaluation. While at the hospital, Troopers interviewed Thomas, who exhibited signs of impairment. He failed a Standardized Field Sobriety Test (SFST) and later refused further chemical testing.

Thomas was released from the hospital and transported to SP Malone for processing. He was charged with Driving While Intoxicated and issued several vehicle and traffic tickets. Thomas was arraigned in the Town of Malone Court and released on his own recognizance
