Rabbi Yaacov Berhman, who handles public relations for Chabad-Lubavitch HQ, said the synagogue was evacuated out of precaution.

The Anti-Defamation League of New York and New Jersey posted a statement on social media following the crash, saying, in part, “This building is not only a synagogue, but also the worldwide @Chabad Headquarters and a beloved symbol of Judaism around the world.”

A spokesperson for Mayor Zohran Mamdani said he arrived at the scene before 11 p.m. on Wednesday.

In a statement posted to social media, Mamdani said he was “relieved no one was injured in this horrifying incident.”

“This is deeply alarming, especially given the deep meaning and history of the institution to so many in New York and around the world. Any threat to a Jewish institution or place of worship must be taken seriously. Antisemitism has no place in our city, and violence or intimidation against Jewish New Yorkers is unacceptable,” Mamdani added.

Attorney General Letitia James also commented on the incident, saying, “Antisemitism and hate of any kind cannot go unchecked in any corner of our city and state.”
