New Yorkers can turn in their firearms for cash cards in Jamaica, Queens, this Saturday, Jan. 31, through Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz’s gun buyback program. The office is offering up to $500 per weapon.
“Gun buybacks serve as a critical tool for reducing gun violence and promoting public safety within our communities,” said Katz in an emailed statement to the Amsterdam News. “Our upcoming gun buyback event will take place on January 31, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Mount Olivet Baptist Church on Hollis Avenue in Jamaica. Our office has hosted close to a dozen such programs in partnership with the NYPD, our faith-based leaders, local public officials, and residents.
“Each one has been successful in helping reduce crime and making our neighborhoods safer. We urge the public to safely surrender operable firearms for cash and be part of that progress.”
Almost anyone can turn a gun, but there is a cap on how many can be exchanged for money (three firearms or two 3D-printed ghost guns). Weapons owned by licensed gun dealers and law enforcement, past or present, will not be accepted.
To take guns to the drop-off site, participants should put a gun in a bag or shoebox and transport the weapon exclusively in the trunk if they are transporting the weapon in a vehicle. To learn more, call 311.
Mount Olivet Baptist Church is at 202-03 Hollis Avenue, Jamaica, NY 11412.
