A deep freeze has taken a hold of the tri-state over the past days, with no immediate end in sight.

These low temperatures are dangerous — and have, unfortunately, proven deadly in New York City. This week, Mayor Zohran Mamdani said at least 10 New York City residents had lost their lives since they were found outdoors amid bitterly cold temperatures in the past few days. Of the 10 deaths in the city, hypothermia played a role in seven of them.

Homeless outreach efforts have been intensified since the snow and frigid temperatures arrived, and continue to do so. Among the efforts, Mamdani said the city was instructing hospitals to limit discharges “to ensure that people who have nowhere to go are kept indoors.” Warming centers are open.
