STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The St. Joseph by-the-Sea girls’ track and field team had revenge on its minds after falling short in last year’s CHSAA/N.Y. Archdiocesan Championships.
On Thursday night, at the recently re-scheduled NY/BQ Sectional Championships at Ocean Breeze, a balanced Sea squad was able to upend defending champion Monsignor Scanlan of the Bronx.
Sea won the team title for the third time in four years by scoring 65 points.
Scanlan (55) and Notre Dame Academy (32) placed second and third overall. Moore Catholic (sixth, 12) and St. Joseph Hill (seventh, nine) rounded out the scoring from the Island.
“I’m thrilled with how the girls competed tonight; we had personal bests all over the place and ran three seasonal best times in the three relays while using 11 different kids,” said Sea coach Chris Mancusi. “We pride ourselves on being able to cover the board and I think that was the key to victory.”
In the combined NY/BQ city championship scoring, Bishop Loughlin emerged the winner by 2.5 points topping the Vikings, 48-45 1/2.
The Island was well represented with city championship wins from Sea’s Keira Lavezzoli (high jump – 4′-6), Eva Maira (triple jump -32′-7.5) and Mariam Azer (pole vault – 8′-0)
Notre Dame’s Shiloh Holman was a runaway winner in the 1,000, stopping the clock in 3:15.63
Sea’s Giuliana Collegio added a pair of silver medals in the 3,000 (10:59.75) and 1,500 (5:11.50)
The Vikings 4×200 of Kaelyn Carroll, Isabella McCumiskey, Eva Maira and Abby Walz took third place, combining to run 1:51.47.
NDA’s Olivia Casas took second overall in the 55 hurdles (9.36) as did Jenna Zanelli in the shot put (28′-4). Teammate Savanna Rice added a third-place medal in the 600 meters (1:42.91)

Boys AA City Championship Recap
Viking senior Adam Vitale unleashed a dramatic kick to win the 1,000 meters in a personal best of 2:31.95 to take the gold. Three hours later, the senior took third in the 1,600 in yet another personal best (4:21.96).
Teammate Jace Lawless took second (6.61) and Farrell’s Kevin Gumb placed third (6.66) in the 55 meters.
Viking junior Chris Perez just missed winning the 600 meters, losing at the tape settling for second place in 1:22.96.
Sea’s Jason Sarnciola was third in the 3,200 breaking a four-year school record with a time of 9:29.73. The previous record was held by Dylan Doskocil from 2022 (9:35.08).
Sarnciola would later team with Perez, Michael Pira and Michael Scalfani to take second in the 4×800 (8:30.32).
“Between the weather and not seeing the kids during midterms it’s a tough time of the year but the boys really stepped up; I’m hoping we are running our best in late February/March,” said Mancusi, who doubles as Sea’s boys’ coach.
Farrell’s 4×200 relay of Jimmy Martinez, Joseph Silvestro, Kevin Gumb and Gianni Pasqualone combined to run 1:33.43 for bronze medals.
The Lion’s Carlodella Ragione placed third in the shotput, throwing 41 feet, one and 1/2 inch.
Fordham Prep won the city title with 55.5 points. Sea led the Island teams with a fifth-place finish, scoring 27 points. Farrell scored 28 points for seventh overall.
Boys A City Championship Recap
Regis was a runaway winner in the team standings with 59 points. Locally, a tight battle was for second place with Moore Catholic (31 points) topping St. Peter’s (29). The Eagles finished in third place overall.
Moore scored in bunches in the three jumping events.
Issiyah Joseph won his first city championship in the high jump (5′-10) leading a Maverick 1-2-3 sweep.
Darnell Hill (5′-6) and Christopher Tabanasi (5′-6) took second and third.
Hill (2nd – 40′-3) and Noah NyanKanzi (3rd – 40′-3) earned medals in the triple jump.
Joseph later added a silver in the long jump (19′-4.75).
“We took third outdoors but we lost an all-timer in Gerald Green; these four guys really took it upon themselves to put in the extra work and its starting to show,” said Mav head coach Jason Paderon.
St. Peter’s was paced by gold medalists Edward Cruz-Gomez (4:32.54) and Vincent Damato (35.60) in the 1,600 and 300 meters, respectively.
Teammate Matthew Carrano added a silver medal in the 1,600 (4:36.68)
The Eagles’ 4×400 relay of Daoud Nejumi, Jordan Lewis, Damato and Vincenzo Coppola ran a seasonal best time of 3:33.34 for the silver.
