STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A week after a monster storm encrusted Staten Island in ice and snow, removal is continuing to hassle residents with uncleared stretches of sidewalk.

An Advance/SILive.com employee spotted a clip of sidewalk on Hylan Boulevard near Oak Avenue still icily encased in the remnants of the snow.

Beyond the mess, a S78 and S57 bus stop has a precariously cleared path, about a shovel-width wide. A mass of dirty snow and ice beyond knee-high surrounds the stop.

The employee additionally spotted heavy-duty equipment scooping bucketloads of crusty ice and thick snow away from the street near Hylan Boulevard and Chesterton Avenue, Oakwood.

The storm dumped over a foot of snow on the borough on Jan. 25, and with temperatures struggling to climb above freezing, folks have struggled to find parking spots and clear walkways.

A spokesperson for the New York City Department of Sanitation assured that the department continues to aid Staten Islanders in the cleanup.

“Knowing that many property owners did not shovel their adjacent unsheltered bus stops and crosswalks as required, DSNY is putting a very heavy emphasis on assisting property owners in this work. We had a massive Staten Island operation out in full force this weekend, widening bus lanes and reopening pathways between the sidewalks and streets at bus stops,” the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson added, “Citywide, we continue to have 2,500 Sanitation Workers on every 12-hour shift, as well as 500 hourly personnel focusing on this infrastructure. In addition, we have 300 people operating specialized equipment via outside emergency contracts.”
