CLAREMONT, Bronx (WABC) — At least 30 people are now homeless after a five-story apartment building caught fire in the Claremont section of the Bronx overnight.
Firefighters raced to the site of a four-alarm fire off the Grand Concourse just after midnight.
FDNY crews extended several ladders from engine trucks as they battled the blaze from above.
Three frozen hydrants hindered their progress as they worked to get the fire under control.
The fire burned through the the top floor and cockloft of the apartment building, leaving visible damage and multiple blown-out windows.
Firefighters pulled two people, an 88-year-old man and a 74-year-old woman, to safety. The two residents are in stable condition.
The Red Cross is now working to help displaced residents, and the FDNY has requested an MTA bus to shelter them temporarily.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
