An Upstate New York pickup truck driver is lucky to be alive after a slab of ice smashed through the driver’s side windshield, according to the New York State Police.
Police said the incident, which occurred on Friday, January 30th, 2026, on Interstate 81 in Homer, NY, began when a slab of ice flew from the top of a tractor-trailer and struck a pickup truck that was traveling behind it.

As you can see in the pictures above, the chunk of ice smashed through the front windshield on the driver’s side. Thankfully, the driver of the pickup truck, who wasn’t identified by police, was evaluated at the scene by first responders and was not seriously injured in the accident.

Police said they are currently trying to identify the driver of the tractor-trailer, who did not stop after the accident.
Clean Snow Off ALL Vehicles
Police also reminded ALL drivers to please take a few extra minutes to fully clear their vehicle before traveling. It could prevent serious injuries, or worse.
“Before you drive, take the time to brush all snow and ice off your vehicle — not just the windshield, said the NYSP. “Snow and ice left on the roof or hood can blow off at highway speeds and become extremely dangerous.”
