1. Mamdani names new Department of Correction commissioner
Mayor Zohran Mamdani appointed Stanley Richards as commissioner of the city’s Department of Correction, making him the first formerly incarcerated person to lead New York City jails.
Richards, president of the Fortune Society, previously served as a top deputy during the Rikers Island staffing crisis. He takes office as a federal remediation manager assumes broad authority over Rikers, and as tensions with the correction officers’ union remain unresolved.
2. End of an era as Jamaica Colosseum Mall closes in Queens
The Jamaica Colosseum Mall in Queens closed Saturday after more than 40 years as a neighborhood and cultural landmark.
Opened in 1984, the mall housed small businesses and played a role in hip-hop history. Shop owners and residents said its closure leaves a void as redevelopment looms under the city’s Jamaica Neighborhood Plan.
