STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Following a destructive three-alarm blaze that injured multiple people Friday, the city Department of Buildings has issued full vacate orders for the properties that were impacted by the fire.

According to the department, their inspectors were called by the FDNY following the fire to conduct a structural stability inspection of the affected properties.

While at 248 Elverton Ave., inspectors observed major structural fire damage throughout the 2-story, semi-attached, single-family home, a spokesman for the Department of Buildings told the Advance/SILive.com. The fire created severe damage to the roof and the party wall shared with the neighboring home.

Structural fire damage was also observed by the same department inspectors at 250 Elverton Ave., the neighboring 2-story, single-family home, where the second floor collapsed onto the first floor.

“As a result of the fire, DOB has issued Full Vacate Orders at 248 and 250 Elverton Ave., and issued orders for the installation of a fence around the two fire-damaged buildings,” the spokesperson revealed.

There was also additional non-structural fire damage to the vinyl siding of 254 Elverton Ave., Great Kills.

First responders on scene informed DOB that there were 6 minor injuries and one moderate injury associated with this fire, the spokesperson said.

On Sunday, DOB engineers returned to the scene to meet with the property owners and agency partners to discuss next steps needed to protect the public from the fire-damaged buildings.

“We will be following up with the owners on this work,” the spokesman said.

The fire broke out on Jan. 31 around 11:23 p.m., at 250 Elverton Ave., which is situated on a dead-end street off Leverett Avenue in Great Kills, a spokesperson for the FDNY previously told the Advance/SILive.com.

Flames tore through the 2.5 story private dwelling and strengthened to the point where a second alarm was declared at 11:42 p.m.

As noted by the spokesperson at the time, at 12:44 a.m. Saturday, the Elverton Avenue fire demanded a third alarm.

The flames were brought under control by 2:53 a.m.

Ultimately, one civilian and two firefighters were taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, the FDNY said.

The Department of Buildings was requested due to a partial collapse of the structure. However, the FDNY spokesperson explained that none of the injuries were sustained from this collapse.

Initial reports said five people, including two firefighters, were injured. A total of seven people were hurt, said Buildings, citing the FDNY.

A freelancer for the Advance/SILive.com said he saw a wall collapse within the structure. Fire personnel was subsequently withdrawn from the house to continue combatting the blaze from the exterior, he added.

Photos from the scene depicted a massive emergency response. An orange glow was seen through the smoke billowing from openings in the structure. The exterior visibly suffered severe charring and structural damage.
