NEW YORK (WBNG) — Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) offices across New York State are set to close on Friday afternoon as the state implements a modernized technology system.
Cortland County Clerk Brooke Kemak said this closure marks the first phase of a project that would consolidate department information.
“There’s about 30 million records that need to be migrated over to the new system,” Kemak said. “With that significant of a number, it is requiring DMV systems to shut down.”
Delaware County Clerk Haley Gransbury said some of these systems haven’t been updated in as long as 50 years, adding further complications to customer service.
She said these upgrades will make information more accessible and more digital, which should provide a quicker in-person DMV experience.
“If you come into the office and you pay your suspension termination fees or any kind of other fees that are owed to DMV,” Gransbury said. ”They should be able to issue you a driver’s license or a document right on site now.”
DMV offices will be reopening around Wednesday, Feb. 18. Until then, county clerks around the state are urging residents in need of DMV assistance to get in before offices shut down on Friday.
“If you have a driver’s license that is going to be expiring, a registration, anything like that,” Gransbury said. “Just get into the offices to have that renewed before that weekend.”
