JAMAICA, Queens (PIX11) – The mother of the baby girl who was abandoned on a Penn Station subway platform this week has been arrested, according to sources.
Police said 30-year-old Assa Diawara was taken into custody in Queens on Wednesday. A newborn with her umbilical cord still attached was left at the busy subway station around 9 a.m. on Monday, sources told PIX11 News.
Police said the baby was wrapped in a blanket. Photos of a woman wanted for questioning in connection with the abandonment were released by the NYPD on Tuesday.
It’s not clear if the woman that police were looking for and Diawara are related. The baby was taken to a local hospital for evaluation, according to authorities.
Diawara was charged with abandonment of a child and endangering the welfare of a child.
