Persia Nelson, who was found guilty of killing her 11-month-old baby, was sentenced Monday morning.
2. Bullying and drug-related cases in New York schools rising, state comptroller says
Bullying and drug-related incidents in New York schools exceeded pre-pandemic highs in 2023-24, according to a report released Monday by state Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. On the other hand, rates of violent and disruptive incidents among students dropped.
3. Gershon’s and Genoa Importing close, citing rising food costs
Gershon’s Deli & Caterers in Schenectady and Genoa Importing in Loudonville have closed their doors for good due to economic conditions, owners announced.
4. Snow removal continues Monday in Troy
Odd-even parking restrictions are in effect Monday for the city. Officials say the restrictions are necessary to allow the city’s quality-of-life crews to remove snow safely and effectively from roadways.
5. Punxsutawney Phil is said to have seen his shadow, forecasting 6 more weeks of wintry weather
Well, it’s Groundhog Day. … again …Â Phil’s news was greeted with a mix of cheers and boos from the tens of thousands who braved temperatures in the single-digits Fahrenheit to await the annual prognostication. The extreme cold kept the crowd bundled up and helped keep people on the main stage dancing.
6. Justice Department says it’s taken down Epstein-related files that may have had victim information
The Justice Department said Monday that it had taken down several thousand documents and “media” that may have inadvertently included victim-identifying information since it began releasing the latest batch of documents related to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein on Friday.
