Images like the photograph of a 5-year-old boy being detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) shocked many Americans and have prompted calls in New York for the state Legislature to prohibit ICE from gaining access to schools.
State Sen. Shelley Mayer, chair of the Senate Education Committee, has proposed comprehensive legislation that would prohibit children from being denied access to a free public education no matter their citizenship or immigration status.
