Inside Arena Embroidery just off Manhattan Avenue in Brooklyn, a machine chatters as it stitches letters of thread onto a coat — the same one Mayor Zohran Mamdani wore during the winter storm that recently swept through New York City’s five boroughs.
The mayor’s outerwear quickly caught the public’s attention.
While the Carhartt coat itself was purchased at Dave’s in Chelsea, members of the mayor’s staff brought it to Arena Embroidery to be customized. The shop has been run by Rocco Arena since 2018.
What You Need To Know
Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s widely noticed winter coat was embroidered at Arena Embroidery in Brooklyn
The Carhartt coat includes city branding and a quote hidden inside the collar from Mamdani’s primary night speech
Arena Embroidery has previously customized items worn by Mamdani and even by Bad Bunny
“It’s really incredible to see it caught on so fast, and we are grateful to be a part of making it happen for him,” Arena said.
The coat features the word “Mayor” stitched on the left sleeve and the municipal logo, “The City of New York,” on the front right chest.

Less visible is a quote sewn inside the collar: “No problem too big. No task too small,” a line from Mamdani’s speech after winning the Democratic mayoral primary last summer.
To make that detail work, the collar needed an adjustment — handled by a tailor who goes simply by Zaer.
“It’s pretty bizarre I’m not going to lie, I get called to do some random jobs, but this is by far one of the ones that see it everywhere popping up, the mayor’s new jacket, this and that, I’m kind of surprised,” Zaer said.

Rounding out the team behind the coat are co-shop managers Nalu Yata and Renzo Diaz.
It isn’t the first time Mamdani has worn something embroidered at Arena.
Over the summer, he wore a hat made for Brooklyn’s Tonita’s Caribbean Social Club — an item that also caught national attention when Grammy winner and Super Bowl halftime performer Bad Bunny wore it to a Yankees game. The hats were embroidered at the shop by Diaz’s company, Where’d U Get That Hat.

“It’s cool that the stuff we have made here has touched New York City through Zohran Mamdani, many other people in the community, through embroidery, and that’s exciting, that’s all you can ask for when you do these things,” Diaz said.
The team at Arena says when the mayor is ready for something else to be embroidered, they’ll be ready to make it happen.
