The New York City Parks Department oversees more than 30,000 acres of land, nearly 14% of the city, putting the responsibility on the parks commissioner to ensure those spaces are maintained and used to their full potential.

Shimamura previously served as Manhattan borough commissioner and has also worked at Columbia University.

She joined “Mornings On 1” Tuesday to discuss her early priorities and how the transition into the job is going.
