(WWNY) – A new Siena University poll says New York voters don’t like Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
According to the poll, 67% view ICE unfavorably and believe agents’ tactics have gone too far.
Around 60% oppose the way ICE is working to arrest people and do not want additional ICE agents sent to New York City.
The poll was conducted between January 26 and 28, days after federal officers shot and killed a second American citizen in Minneapolis.
“When it comes to ICE, voters quickly divide into partisan camps, with independents coming closer to the views of Democrats,” said Siena pollster Steven Greenberg. Republicans view ICE favorably, support the way they are working and nearly three-quarters want additional ICE agents sent to New York City. Democrats and independents say exactly the opposite: unfavorable to ICE, don’t like the way they work, and don’t want more of them in the Big Apple.”
Roughly 40% of voters support deporting people who are in the United States illegally.
The poll also says Governor Kathy Hochul saw her highest ever favorability rating of 49%.
According to the poll, the Democrat holds a commanding lead over her likely Republican opponent Bruce Blakeman in November’s election.
