NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A two-alarm fire at a home in Queens early Wednesday morning was sparked by a neighbor’s Diwali fireworks display, sources told 1010 WINS.
The home on Foch Boulevard, near 132nd Street in South Ozone Park, caught fire at about 2:15 a.m., according to the FDNY.
Investigators were told that the fire broke out after fireworks were lit in a neighbor’s yard as they celebrated Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, sources said.
The holiday, honoring the triumph of good over evil, was observed on Monday and Tuesday in the U.S. Fireworks are a common part of the tradition.
Three people were inside the home and escaped the blaze, which grew quickly and spread to a neighboring home. Fire officials said that two people were taken to an area hospital with minor injuries.
Over 100 fire and medical personnel were on the scene, and the fire was brought under control within an hour, the FDNY said.
There have been no arrests and an investigation is ongoing.
