Around NYC

1. NY1 Investigation: Thousands of noncitizens arrested, held without bond hearings due to Trump admin rule change

An NY1 investigation found thousands of immigrants are being held in detention for months without bond hearings due to a Trump administration reinterpretation of a 1996 immigration law.

Lawyers nationwide say clients who once qualified for hearings are now subject to mandatory detention.

Federal judges have repeatedly ordered releases through habeas petitions, but the policy remains in effect as courts weigh whether the issue will ultimately reach the Supreme Court.

2. NYPD release body camera footage of Queens man shot by police

The NYPD released body camera video showing police shooting 22-year-old Jabez Chakraborty during a mental health crisis call at his Queens home.

The video came after the family criticized the city’s response, saying they requested medical help, not police. Chakraborty remains on a ventilator, according to relatives.

3. Special NYC elections 2026: Diana Moreno wins in Mamdani’s Queens district

Democrat Diana Moreno is the projected winner of the special election for the 36th Assembly District in Queens, according to the Associated Press.

Moreno defeated Rana Abdelhamid and Mary Jobaida in a race covering parts of Astoria, Ditmars, Astoria Heights and northern Long Island City. The seat opened after Zohran Mamdani vacated it to become mayor.

Two other state legislative seats were also decided Tuesday in Manhattan.
