There’s some major hockey news for fans across New York State! In a late-night post on X this past Tuesday, Governor Kathy Hochul praised the NHL’s decision to host the All-Star Game and Skills Competition on Long Island.

New York State has a proud history and deep tradition in hockey. From Buffalo to Long Island, kids grow up dreaming of becoming professional players from the moment they first lace up their skates. Here in Western New York, local rinks are packed every weekend from morning until night.

Governor Hochul made the announcement late Tuesday, and fans are already buzzing with excitement about what’s to come in early 2027.

According to a post from NHL News, the league is canceling the Olympic send-off event and instead bringing the All-Star Game back to Long Island. “Traditional NHL All Star Game and Skills Competition is returning on Feb 5-7, 2027 at UBS Arena on Long Island”.

When it comes to hockey history in New York, one unforgettable moment that immediately comes to mind is the 1980 Olympic matchup between the United States and Russia. Who could forget the “Miracle on Ice”? I was only three at the time, but my family was in Lake Placid for the games—my mother grew up just a town over in Saranac. What a thrill for fans then, and what a thrill for fans now, hearing that the All-Star Game will once again be played right here in the Empire State.
