HUNT VALLEY, Md. (TNND) — The three major candidates in New York City’s mayoral election will participate in their last debate Wednesday night.

New York State Asm. Zohran Mamdani, D-District 36, former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa, founder of the Guardian Angels patrol group, will answer questions for 90 minutes starting at 7 p.m. eastern time.

Spectrum News NY1 will host the debate in partnership with New York Public Radio and news outlet The City, along with other institutions. NY1 anchor Errol Louis, radio station WNYC host Brian Lehrer and The City reporter Katie Honan are the event’s moderators.

Asm. Mamdani, the Democratic candidate, has centered his platform on affordability. He has committed to freezing rent for all stabilized tenants and to the construction of hundreds of thousands of affordable homes.

“I’m proud to say that I, yes, will freeze the rent for more than two million rent-stabilized tenants, and I will also build 200,000 truly affordable homes across the five boroughs over the next 10 years to ensure that tenants, whether rent-stabilized or market-rate, can actually have more housing, such that they are not being priced out of this city,” Asm. Mamdani said in response to a question on rent during the first mayoral debate last week.

Cuomo, who is running as an independent, has also campaigned on affordability, as well as public safety. The former governor plans to grow the New York City Police Department (NYPD) and increase its presence on subways while improving quality of life in the city.

“I think we have to change the ethos in this city, the ethic in this city. Right now it’s toxic, it’s divisive, everyone’s angry at everyone. I think when we have public safety that’s functional again, and New Yorkers are part of that system, I think they would be more cooperative than you think,” Cuomo said during the debate on Thursday.

Sliwa, the Republican nominee, has often cited his experience with the Guardian Angels when talking about public safety. He founded the group in 1979, and volunteers have patrolled New York City streets since as “visual deterrents” of crime.

“I created the Guardian Angels to provide public safety in the subways and streets when government was incapable of doing so,” Sliwa said during last week’s debate. “I didn’t do it to get a title or a paycheck.”

Wednesday’s debate will take place three days before early voting starts. The city’s election day is Nov. 4.
