An 18-year-old man is in critical condition and a police officer is recovering from a serious head injury after an altercation with police in the Bronx Thursday night, according to the NYPD.
Chief of Patrol Philip Rivera said officers from the 49th Precinct responded around 9:15 p.m. to a domestic robbery call on Van Nest Avenue. The caller told police his son had robbed his mother and older brother at gunpoint.

Officers responding to a report of an armed domestic robbery tracked the suspect to a second location, where gunfire erupted while police waited for backup

When officers arrived, the father told them he believed his son had fled to a home on Gun Hill Road and was still armed. Police arrived at the second location and set up a perimeter around the residence.
There, they made contact with the suspect, who denied being the person they were looking for, according to Rivera. The father, however, recognized his son’s voice.
“As officers waited for the Emergency Services Unit to arrive for what they believed was a barricaded suspect, they heard three gunshots from inside the apartment,” Rivera said.
The suspect then opened the door, ran out and struggled with officers attempting to take him into custody.
During the struggle, one officer fell backward and struck his head. Another officer then fired her weapon, hitting the suspect twice, once in the lower back and once in the arm.
A loaded gun was recovered at the scene, along with a bag found on the suspect, according to Rivera.
Both the suspect and the injured officer were taken to Jacobi Medical Center, where the officer is in stable condition and expected to recover. The suspect remains in critical condition.
Authorities said the suspect has a significant criminal history.
“This incident demonstrates the dangerous situations that our officers confront every single day,” Rivera said. “Thankfully, our officers were able to apprehend the suspect, and our injured officer is expected to make a full recovery.”
